About the software

Stata/MP allows you to analyze data in half to two-thirds of the time than Stata/SE. This is compared to Stata/SE using inexpensive dual-core laptops, and one-quarter to one third the time with quad-core laptops. Stata/MP runs faster on multiprocessor server. Stata/MP supports up to 64 cores/processors.

Speed is often most crucial when performing computationally intense estimation procedures. A few of Stata’s estimation procedures, including linear regression, are nearly perfectly parallelized, meaning they run twice as fast on two cores, four times as fast on four cores, eight times as fast on eight cores, and so on. Some commands are easier to parallelize than others. At the median, estimation commands run about 1.8 times faster in 2 cores than they do on 4 cores. They also run 2.9 times faster in 4 cores and 4.1 times faster when running on 8 cores.

Large datasets can be difficult to manage quickly. Adding variables to the database is nearly 100 per cent parallelized. Sorting is 61% parallelized.

Some procedures can’t be parallelized. Others are inherently sequential.
